If you have wondered what it is like to go to a 3rd world country as a lay person from your church, here is a glimpse for you of one of our mornings during a VBS music time. Picture the temperature being rather hot as you can see the direct bright sunlight all around us in their "auditorium" where they have "assemblies". No one there complains about getting a bad seat or not seeing the stage. They are only eager to hear the message and have fun. There is no pushing or shoving to be "first" to receive any handouts for the craft time.
All around are feet that hang over the edges of their worn out sandals and flip flops or squished toes inside shoes that don't fit.
All around are dirty hands and foreheads from the dusty roads they walked on to get to school.
All around are humble smiles and rather lean looking children.
Also all around are those that stand in front of my camera with black ant costumes and funny headbands and hats on, being enveloped by a joy that we can not describe very well in words.
All those that participated in VBS in Nicaragua from AUMC are forever linked to the hearts of these children.
The simple "telephone song" we sang with the children here says "I have a telephone to talk to God. This phone has no numbers. The phone is prayer."
I am reminded more often now when I start to use my cell phone, to use my "telephone" with no numbers when I really need to talk to someone!
